Description

You reach this home in the picturesque Klein Begijnhof via a charming cobbled path with a round-arched gate or from the rear entrance. In this street—one of Mechelen’s most beautiful—with 16th- and 17th-century buildings, just a stone’s throw from the city centre, absolute tranquillity reigns. Only a few steps away lies the OH! Tuin, a green park with a small brook, where it is a delight to relax.

This protected monument, named 'De Dry Koningen', dates back to 1692 (!) and was fully restored in 1992 by architect Karel Beeck, following the highest standards of craftsmanship. Original elements, such as the stunning ceilings and wooden crossbeams, were preserved and restored as much as possible or replicated based on the original model, including the front door and the beautiful wooden windows with interior shutters.

The entrance hall leads to a separate office on the left and a spacious, sunlit living area, study, or sitting room at the back. The adjacent space—the original passage to the workshop at nr. 5—offers multiple possibilities: an outdoor patio with wonderful natural light, a living kitchen, and more.

A fully original spiral staircase leads to the voutekamer with a toilet, cellar, and attic. On the first floor: three spacious rooms, including two bedrooms and a large living area. The kitchen and bathroom require renovation. On the second floor: a large attic with a wood stove, space for a bed, lounge, dining table, and a generous south-facing rooftop terrace. Prefer to divide this floor into two bedrooms? That is perfectly possible.

A rare opportunity to live in the stunning Klein Begijnhof of Mechelen.

The owners,

owner speaks out

This property has been in our family for 76 years. My grandfather bought it in 1948, along with the former garden at the back, now nr. 5, where he built his furniture-making workshop. From 1978 to 1989, the place served as an art gallery, Galerij Bogaerd, founded by my mother. After the restoration in 1992, the house took on a new role, which it still retains today: a cosy home with a home office. Living in the Klein Begijnhofbogaard is a delight. It feels like a small community in the heart of a historic city. As you step through the ancient gate, you are greeted by an incomparable sense of peace and tranquillity. It feels like stepping back to a time when stress didn’t exist. This is home. Silence, greenery, a neighbour greeting you good morning, birds singing... Inside, from the very first moment, you can enjoy the sunlight streaming through the windows and the breathtaking view of the Sint-Romboutstoren from the rooftop terrace. And another lovely surprise: we still have the original 17th-century front door. We’ve been told that the Three Kings, after whom this house was named, are depicted on the fresco.
